Setting Performance
Standards is akin to setting a student goal, except that you are setting a goal for a grade level and it is designed to remain
constant over time.
Performance Standards are a set RIT point that teachers and students of a given grade level
will work together to achieve by the end of that year.
Performance Standards are set by defining what it is that
students should know and be able to do by the end of each grade. That definition is compared to the Des Cartes Learning Continuum
to assign a RIT score to that definition.
The attached PowerPoint slides give a step-by-step process for setting
Performance Standards. A group of teachers, parents, students, and other stakeholders should work together to define the skills
and knowledge students exiting each grade will need.
